Point Lookout NY Children's Day 2012

The Point Lookout Civic Association held their 81st Annual Children's Day under sunny skies at the beach on Saturday Sept 1, 2012. Community children competed in various activities such as running and swimming races, sand castle competitions, pizza eating contests, boogie board races, sack races, carnival games, dunk tanks (yes, folks, that brown water comes from our pipes) cotton candy, ice cream, and, to top it off, a tast-of Point Lookout and dancing under the stars. Participants and winners were awarded at an award ceremony that took place after the events at the Point Lookout A-frame.

Over the course of the day Chamber members also participated in several contest and awarded prizes to the children. The First National Bank of Long Island, Olive Oil's and Skipperdees held respective competitions over the course of the event.

Thanks to The Civic Association and all of their organizers and volunteers for making this such a remarkable success and a wonderful way to end the summer. See you next year!

Point Lookout, NY Old Timers Salute and Little League All Star Game

The Point Lookout Little League hosted the final event of the baseball season on Thursday August 30, 2012 with the annual old timers salute and all star game. The evening begins with an nostalgic introduction of past players for the Point Lookout League. All Star Players escorted the "old timers" onto the infield with each introduction.

The evening culmimated with the 2012 Point Lookout All Star Game. MVP players were selected to play from the Bulldogs, Chickens, Piranhas and the Sharks.

Nassau County Fire District 2nd Battalion Parade - 8.11.12 Lido Boulevard -- Point Lookout, New York

Bagpipes, horses, and marching bands marched on Saturday August 11 when The Point Lookout/Lido Beach Fire Departments hosted the annual 2nd Battalion Parade.

The parade stepped off at approximately 6:30 p.m. from the Point Lookout Ballfield and headed south to Ocean Blvd. before turning onto Parkside Drive and then up the main street of Lido Boulevard. The 2nd Battalion consists of seven Fire Departments in Nassau County: Baldwin, Freeport, Island Park, Long Beach, Oceanside, Point Lookout, Lido Beach and Atlantic Beach Rescue.

The annual 2nd Battalion Parade not only recognizes the volunteer service of the communities' first responders, but also the salutes their commitment and dedication to serving the public and keeping their communities safe.

After the parade, participants and spectators congregated at the Point Lookout Ballfield for a giant block party that featured international food, music, dancing and rides for the children.

The host town rotates every years, so Point Lookout will not see the 2nd Battalion Parade for another 6 years.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit is Indeed Alive and Well in Point Lookout, NY.

POINT LOOKOUT, NY -- We spotted an impromptu lemonade stand on the corner of Lido and Cedarhurst the otherday. If you think about the state of the country and the economy and these kids with the lemonade stand, perhaps it might bring you back to your childhood that may have involved not only a lemonade stand, but maybe handmade fishing lures or a lawn mowing service. After watching as several of the neighborhood kids joined the lemonade stand sales team, I realized that the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well inside each one of us.

Over the last couple of years, we have all watched as big business has failed us. We have gotten away from the spirit that made America great. It was the small business. Those of us who own small businesses know that we are the grease on the wheel of the American economy. Yet it seems that those individuals on Wall Street who are largely responsible for this economic mess we are in, just wanted the quick buck at our expense with no concern for America. But that's another story.

Now back to the Lemonade stand, these kids were financing their venture from a piggy bank. They made all of the plans, they did all of the work, and they cleaned up all of the mess. I am sure we will see the stand pop up again from time to time on a street corner in Point Lookout. Maybe next time you see them, you will stop by and provide a little encouragement.

The entrepreneurial spirit is indeed alive and well in Point Lookout, NY.

Sunday Night Concert at Point Lookout Beach 7.22.12

THE POINT LOOKOUT -- LIDO BEACH FIRE DEPARTMENT SALUTES MICHAEL NOONAN

Mike was like no other.

I had the pleasure of being a fellow Renegade member with Mike for 10 years in the Point. His experience from NYC EMS and firefighting benefited all that knew him. The old Mack TL 254 (the True Renegade Rig) was his baby. He could drive that thing as if it was a Volkswagon. (ahh, he would tell us the faster the rig went, the thinner it got, especially on all the Mutual Aids to Long Beach.) Above all he was a good friend to all that knew him.

Memories will never be forgotten, as ex 4100 will attest from many a Sunday afternoon marathon 10th Battalion Meeting at Chicolino's. Yep, he was one of the original charter members of the 10th Battalion... Sunday afternoons at Chicolino's and Monday Nights at Joe's Anchor Inn... He helped put the Point on the Map.. 'Have Tower Ladder will Travel'... although some of the older members and Commissioners weren't too keen on that... Running calls in Hicksville with 931... chasing them as they were stealing the Renegade gate out of the Co. Room... Picnics and training with the brothers from Merrick 6411... hanging on the beach with the old (Green) 529 with Tav, Rodni and the Glen Cove crew.... taking the 'Mean Green Venting Machine' sign from Elmont Truck 2.. the Company Baseball Games... NC Emerald Society Meetings at the Rescue House... and it goes on and on.. the times were amazing... and who can forget the Wedding March from Miraculous Medal Church to the PVI. when he married Mary.. Tower Ladders up and down Lido Blvd with 254 and 931 in front of the PVI..

We need to never forget Mike and all that he did for the Fire Service in Nassau County. He had a heart of Gold. I ask all my brothers and sisters that knew Mike to take a moment and reflect on the good times had... the way the Fire Service used to be.. FUN!

Friendships were made. Fires were put out. Trainings were done. No one got hurt. Life went on. It didn't matter what Company you were in, what Department you were from, or where you worked... it was a brotherhood and we all learned and had respect for each other..... and yes.. the 'F' word... we had FUN!!! Take a moment ...reflect... remember the laughs and good times..

I wish I could make it back for the Memorial.. but scheduling just doesn't allow it. Mike, I will never forget you... Thank you for your friendship and your teachings.. The Point was never the same after you headed south... Enjoy that big Firehouse in the sky... I am sure you are driving the old Mack TL to a job somewhere...

Rest in Peace my brother... I am sure there will be an amazing turnout for the Memorial for you!!!!!

Point Lookout NY is on the Cutting Edge of Renewable Energy

Point Lookout, NY is home to Long Island’s first fully solar powered municipal building as well as Long Island’s first and only renewable energy park, which features solar, wind, hydrogen and geothermal energy. The energy park is home to a solar and wind-powered shellfish nursery, a self-reliant solar office acquired from NYIT, a 60k solar field, solar trackers (two solar panels that track the sun’s path), Long Island’s first hydrogen fueling station and wind turbine. In addition, the Town of Hempstead is completing a 20k solar panel system at the Conservation and Waterways facility in Point Lookout with a hydroponics garden in the filtered light of the bi-facial panels. Two solar carports are also being added to our first solar-electric car charging station in Point Lookout.  

Educating residents and young people is a vital component of the Town of Hempstead’s energy agenda.  Solar how-to seminars hosted by Hempstead Town show homeowners how they can incorporate solar energy into their daily lives. Schools and organizations alike are always welcomed to tour the energy park in Point Lookout and receive a hands-on program offering a view into potential energy.

Supervisor Murray addressed how Hempstead Town continues to expand its alliances and partnerships with local universities and colleges to further its green energy research.  Other cutting edge research includes new geothermal wells Hempstead Town is installing at town facilities for cooling and heating as well as the development of an overall energy strategy for the town.

“Events like this help to promote and advance technological alliances and move progressive energy initiatives forwards,” concluded Supervisor Murray. “I’m appreciative that Hempstead Town was a part of such a worthwhile event.”

The Jones Beach Theater Concert Series: A Stone's Throw Away from Point Lookout, NY

The Jones Beach Summer Concert Series takes place within sight distance of Point Lookout, NY. This year kicks off it's 2012 season on Friday, June 8th with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hororee Neil Diamond. Sing along to “Cracklin’ Rosie,” “America,” and that great old standby, “Sweet Caroline.” Show time is 8 p.m.


The Beach Boys – Sunday, June 24th


The highly anticipated re-union of The Beach Boys comes June 24th to Jones Beach. This tour marks the 50th Anniversary of the group and fans can listen to hits such as “Help Me Rhonda,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and many more. Show time is 7:30 p.m.


Stevie Nicks, In Your Dreams – Friday, June 29th


Former Fleetwood Mac band member and iconic solo artist Stevie Nicks returns to Jones Beach to perform songs from “In Your Dreams.” Look for some classics, too, in this must-see concert. Doors open at 7p.m., and show time is 8 p.m.
