We have a mission...

 

PLHS was established in 1993 with the determination and foresight of many dedicated community volunteers. This invaluable website, started in the mid 1990s by long-time volunteer and current PLHS trustee, Tom Dowling, exemplifies the character of PLHS and its mission to communicate with the public. Driven by the mantra "no documents, no history", the PLHS mission has always been to collect and preserve materials by and about Point Lookout as well as to educate the community and indeed anyone interested about Point Lookout's historical heritage. In pursuit of its mission, the Society serves as the stewards of thousands upon thousands of pieces of Point Lookout history for which it maintains an archive and repository.

We envision a new home...

PLHS seeks a new home: Like many of our community members, PLHS suffered from damage done by Hurricane Sandy. Fortunately, we had no losses of materials, which were housed in our former space in the Ye Olde Firehouse. We were, however, obligated to move out of that location; a place we called home for over twenty years. This past Spring, the founding trustees of the Point Lookout Historical Society reached out to architect Joseph Brennan, to see if he was interested in taking on a "local" design for his community. Joe, having the expertise and the passion for his town, was a perfect match. Above you see an architectural rendering by Brennan, which resulted from initial meetings and discussions that continue about preservation needs and community access to the archive and the Point Lookout Historical Society's desire to offer a dynamic cultural community gathering space for meeting and learning about the history of Point Lookout and its environs.

Work Begins on Old Merola's Supermarket on Lido Boulevard

Hurricane Sandy Cleanup Continues in Point Lookout, NY 11569

The Town of Hempstead has been doing a stellar job of removing refuge from the effects of Hurricane Sandy in Point Lookout, NY. Workers are seen loading trucks on Lido Blvd in front of JoJo Apples Cafe.

The Point Lookout Chamber of Commerce Submits Appeal Letter to Governor Cuomo

Dear Governor Cuomo,

On behalf of over 60 small businesses represented by the Point Lookout Chamber of Commerce, we find the LIPA response regarding the restoration of power to Point Lookout, NY to be unacceptable. Our trust in this public utility has been violated.  Our business & residential community depends on this utility to function. Our community has been without power since October 29th and is immobilized as are other communities serviced by LIPA. Our residents have no heat, businesses are unable to serve our community or rebuild.  Various reports suggest that power will not be restored anytime soon and statements have been made that LIPA will try to get back power on next weekend, November 11th!

County Executives and Governor Cuomo, I ask accountability of LIPA to put more action into getting Nassau County up and running. I also request that resources above and beyond getting power back that LIPA do something to help in the damage that has been caused by the amount of time the power has been off.  If LIPA cannot serve its customers in a timely fashion then a substantive power generator should be sent to Point Lookout, NY and other Nassau County towns to restore our business districts and  communities. Each day without power makes it more difficult for the businesses to rebound after this unprecedented disaster.  It is your responsibility and obligation as an elected leader to respond to our business community and residents.

Your reply to this request in a manner other than an automated reply will determine how seriously you accept your responsibility as elected leaders. I invite all executives to visit our community of Point Lookout, NY to illustate that we are prepared to serve our community if LIPA would restore power. To our knowledge, no elected officials have visited. Our business community has been completely halted and our bayside businesses that have served our community for over 80 years have been destroyed. We have diligently attempted to restore our community with only limited resources. Our community shares the same barrier island as Long Beach, NY and would like to serve and help the re-building of our devastated next door neighbor, Long Beach, NY.  Thank you in advance for your response.

Point Lookout Mourns the Loss of Nicky Linton

A heart warming memorial service was held on Saturday October 27, 2012 to celebrate the life & times of local resident Nicky Linton. The service included eulogies by Pastor Greg and by his sisters Sandy and Patty. Nicky will be missed by those who knew him and by the community of Point Lookout.

LINTON – Nicholas, of Point Lookout, NY died on October 15, 2012 at the age of 55. Adored son of Catherine and the late Leonard Linton, beloved brother of Sandy and Patty Linton and brother-in-law of Dara Zargar and Jeffrey Fenton.  Courageous, mischievous and loving, Nicky’s gentle strength and kind heart will be missed by all who knew him.  A memorial service will be held Saturday October 27 at 11am at the Point Lookout Community Church, 60 Freeport Ave in Point Lookout.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Nicky’s joy at Camp Anchor, 630 Lido Blvd., Lido Beach, NY 11561.

New Wind Turbine Graces Point Lookout Skyline

As the song says, “the answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind.” The “question” in the case of Hempstead Town’s new 100-kilowatt wind turbine is, “how do you fuel-up pollution-free cars without creating any carbon footprint?” More specifically, Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilwoman Angie Cullin today unveiled a state-of-the-art wind turbine that will provide the energy necessary to create hydrogen gas, which is being used to power the town’s fuel cell cars. This “closed loop” energy system is completely “green” in producing fuel for vehicles that emit no pollutants.

Also present at the high-energy event were Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin and Long Island energy partners, including the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College, New York Institute of Technology, Wilke Engineering, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), the Point Lookout and Lido Beach Civic Associations and the Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department.
