POINT LOOKOUT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — They volunteer and save lives, and now firefighters on Long Island have asked communities to upgrade old, out-of-date firehouses.
But as CBS 2’s Carolyn Gusoff reported Monday, critics said some of the new firehouses are actually more like mansions.
The big, new firehouses are paid for with taxpayers’ dollars, cut some people have said they are over the top.
“Humongous,” one resident said. “It’s beyond what’s necessary.”
Many of the 126 Long Island fire districts have recently rebuilt — in the 30,000 square-foot range. Westhampton Beach just gave the nod to a $15 million doubling of its aging firehouse.
Some residents, grateful for the brave lifesaving work of volunteer firemen, have been questioning on the Internet why headquarters have to be so big.
Internet posts ask:
“Why must LI have mansions as firehouses?”
“It’s not being ungrateful, but why is the firehouse the nicest house in town?”
“An outrage: state of the art gyms, 5-star restaurant kitchens, flat screens, marble floors, elaborate bars!”
The debate has fire officials in Point Lookout hoping there will not be a backlash. They’re asking for $7 million to replace firehouses built when ambulances were the size of vans and fire trucks had open backs.
Bigger apparatus, and mandates, mean firehouses have to be bigger. And fire officials said volunteers deserve some comforts.
“We want to offer some amenities for the guys when they’re hanging out — you know, big screen TV, a company room — but some of these big firehouses are, they’re huge,” said Lido and Point Lookout Fire Commissioner Chas Thompson.
And many residents said they don’t mind footing the bill.
“I trust that these guys know what they need, and they don’t think they would frivolously put something out there that we don’t need,” one resident said.
“The firemen deserve what they need to get the job done,” another said.
“The people who complain are not the people who get woken up at 3 in the morning to fight a fire,” a third said.
There is no gym in the Point Lookout firehouse plan – just showers and room for trucks to fight fires.
Fire officials said the $350 per year in taxes is still a bargain.
The vote on new firehouses in Point Lookout and Lido is set for July 9.

“Hempstead Town will ignite this year’s Independence Celebration with a spectacular beach concert and fireworks show,” added Supervisor Murray. “This will be a great night of FREE family entertainment and I invite everyone to arrive early, place their lawn chairs or blankets close to the stage, bring a picnic dinner and enjoy themselves before the show.”
The town celebration will begin with a tribute to several military veterans who have distinguished themselves in service to their country and their community. Following the veteran’s tribute and concert, Bay Fireworks will brighten the night sky with a world-class fireworks display.
Spectators will enjoy viewing the vintage automobiles on display from several area car clubs as well as an impressive array of military vehicles and armored equipment from the 2nd Marines 25th Battalion of Garden City. There will also be a food stand on site serving up a tasty menu of concert treats.

POINT LOOKOUT, N.Y. -- Point Lookout honored the nation’s service men and women on Memorial Day with a special ceremony at the Point Lookout/Lido Fire Department. The annual breakfast on Lido Boulevard drew a large gathering of local residents.
The morning included invocations by the local clergy, a solemn remembrance for those that made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces, and the playing of taps. Following the ceremony, the Fire Department provided a free breakfast provided by the Sandcastle Cafe for all that attended.
A number of local children who have formed, "Small Hands Big Hearts", engaged in a fund raising drive to raise awareness to support Oklahoma tornado victims.
Local businesses are accepting essential goods at drop boxes at these locations ... The Sandcastle, Ted's Fishing Station, The Clam Bar, Buoy Bar, Fisherman's Catch, Skipperdees, Wine & Spirits, JoJo's, PL Public Library, The Ale House, and the First National Bank.

Dear Mr. Zampella:
Thank you for writing to express your frustration over the response of power utilities in restoring electricity after Hurricane Sandy. My sympathies go out to all New Yorkers who lost loved ones, their homes and their livelihoods during this horrific storm. I want to assure you that Senator Gillibrand and I are working tirelessly to bring needed federal funding and assistance for a swift recovery effort.
Hurricane Sandy created a large number of power outages throughout New York State. In the Hudson Valley approximately 200,000 customers lost power while on Long Island, over 500,000 LIPA customers lost power and over 700,000 Consolidated Edison customers, in New York City lost power.
Senator Gillibrand and I toured the storm damage and talked to many local residents and officials to see first-hand where aid and restoration is needed. The debris caused by Hurricane Sandy’s destruction created obstacles for utility workers attempting to restore power to devastated areas. Senator Gillibrand and I requested and received $40 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for clean-up costs to remove the debris. The Army Corp of Engineers was brought in to remove debris in New York City, Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley, clearing roads to speed up the process for electrical workers to restore power lines.
We also pushed for FEMA disaster relief funding for businesses and families in New York City, Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley. With our direction, FEMA mobilized disaster recovery centers to distribute disaster funds to home owners and local businesses who applied for recovery assistance. We also called for FEMA relief funds for first responders, firefighters and police, and hospital workers for their hard work.
Senator Gillibrand and I tirelessly petitioned the federal government for robust relief aid to help ease the burdens of those impacted by the storm. With our direction, on December 28th 2012 the Senate approved $60.4 billion in an emergency spending aid package for victims of Hurricane Sandy. However, this funding was stalled by the House majority in unfortunate partisan politicking. On January 4th 2013 the House passed $9.7 billion to cover flood insurance claims filed by individuals whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Finally, two weeks later, the needed $50.7 billion relief package was passed by the House majority, following a push by Senate Democrats. This federal disaster assistance will give reassurance to our communities that the federal government will be there to help as we continue on the road to recovery.

gratitude from his fellow citizens.

Point Lookout, NY.
I had the opportunity to speak with our honoree tonight this past Saturday for about 2 hours. It was not long before it became obvious to me that he has a deep rooted love and affection for this community. His service and dedication to our business community for the last 8 decades is unmatched. He will say the there is no other community like Point Lookout, NY anywhere. He will say it is a rare and unique jewel remaining virtually untouched by the outside world. If you have ever wondered how it is that our "Little Community by the Sea" has maintained it's charm and remains free of the urban sprawl of our surrounding areas, you would need to thank our honoree tonight. His selfless efforts and quiet service to this community has resulted in an improved quality life for all in Point Lookout. He came here with his family in 1929, from Oceanside, NY via Salem, Massachusetts at the tender age of nine. At that time, there were approximately 43 families that lived in town year round. It was the height of the depression and he will tell you emphatically, "TIMES WERE TOUGH". The full time resident were all engaged in local commerce. The were the contractors and builder that physically built this town. He will tell you that the family business had it's humble beginning with a "building boom" that occurred on Inwood Ave around 1935. For those of you that don't know, Inwood Avenue was only intended to be a temporary street at one time. The land beyond it was a series of dunes that ebbed and flowed with the tides. Glenn Little, the local builder began building a series of 1 story brick homes that line Inwood Ave today. You could purchase one for $3,000. If you wanted an extra lot to go along with it, that would set you back an additional $500. This building boom, solidified the family business. For $240 per house, they installed the complete plumbing system. Our honoree recalls how he cut the rumble seat of the back of the chassis of his Model A Ford & retrofitted it as a improvised pickup truck. He will also recall how he used to take that Model A out on the ice of Reynolds Channel when it froze over in the winter. Commerce at that time in Point Lookout would have been comprised of builders such as Ralph Vale, Bill Helmer & Glenn Little. Lauders Restaurant was over by the Rescue House and would entertain the likes of Tom Dyer who was the first Postmaster in Point Lookout. He had been appointed by Teddy Roosevelt as a reward for his loyalty when they both Charged up San Juan Hill together in 1898. Jimmy Quinto hauled Coal and Ice and had a single gas pump outside his shop on Lido Blvd. There was Stanley White's Luncheonette where Merolas stands. Mike and Eddies was a local bar where Gelos is located and of course Whities Oasis. There was Mauriortiy & Courtmeiers across the street and Gibbetts which is now the Fishermans Catch and Merlos Supermarket that was in the building next to where Skipperdees is today. Yes Point Lookout was teeming with commerce, but there was also a tremendous sense of community and civic responsibility that when along with a growing population. Our recipient tonight, in addition to being a successful entrepreneur and businessmen has been a quiet servant of this community for many years. He is a two time chief of the Point Lookout Volunteer Fire Company Inc. He will politely remind you not to confuse it with the current day Point Lookout Fire Department. It's first chief was Joe Scully and the 15 members moved the original engine room with Old Sam's Horses on block and tackle to it's current location that we know as Ye Ole Firehouse. The community banded together and raised funds themselves by selling bonds and volunteering their work to build the all purpose hall and the east wing on the firehouse. The family business put in the plumbing. This early group of local leaders and businessmen were never intimidated by the daunting initiatives that they tackled. There was a “Can Do!” spirit that motivated them. This group of merchants did not need to rely on local government for support. If they saw a need, they did it themselves. Together they built a community center that saw grand evenings, theater productions, dinner dances, weddings and it was the meeting spot for both Churches before they had their own buildings. It was the heartbeat of the community and a monument to civic cooperation. Our Honoree tonight erected the first public Christmas Tree in town on Lido Boulvevard. He will probably not tell you how much trouble he got into when he shorted out the family fuse box as a result. He would go on to organize the decoration of light on Lido Blvd each year with the local electrician. Our Honoree tonight, helped form the first boy scout troop in Point Lookout along with Ludwig Meier. At the time Point Lookout was all sand and no trees. Troop 525, which met at the firehouse planted the trees that adorn town so they could all attend the International Boy Scout Jamboree that was held in Switzerland that year. If you appreciate the shade during the summer around town, you may want to thank tonights recipient. Our Honoree tonight served for 17 years as the chairman of the Zoning Committee of the Civic Association & served for 20 years on it's Board of Directors. His tenure saw the elimination of two family housing which has maintained the character of the community to this day. He hung the first halyard on the top of the Coast Guard Station Flag Pole. He erected Point Lookout's first ice skating rink. In the 1950's his father saw to it that the special parks district and beaches were protected for generations to come and in 1954 the beach and the parks were protected. In the 60's he served as a republican committeeman responsible for numerous legislative changes to protect the community including spearheading the purchase of the Vest Park Property that is adjacent to Merola's. In the 70's he once again came to the assistance of his firehouse. When the Board of Fire Commissioners threatened demolition, he made sure violations in the building were corrected in order to ensure it's survival. He will ask you to reflect that no other community in Nassau County really has anything like it and even today it's very existence continues to be threatened by the Board of Fire Commissioners. Today he continues to play an active role with local legislators. It is not unusual to see him leading an entourage of dignitaries through town with suggestions for community improvements. It is with great pride that the Point Lookout Chamber of Commerce his friends and professional associates salute and celebrate Master Plumber John D. McDonald Sr. with this life long achievements award for his outstanding service and dedication to our business community and civic contributions to his beloved town of Point Lookout, NY.
